Adapting to a new style of teaching in a foreign language can be challenging. A range of dedicated academic and language support is built in so you can leave Dakar feeling confident and successful both in French and your courses.

Astou Sagna, Director

As director of APA Dakar semester and summer program, Dr Astou Sagna is responsible for all things academically and culturally related. Dr. Sagna meets with students for academic and language support, coordinates with faculty, and ensures the well-being of all involved. Dr. Sagna has a PhD in Written African Literature at Université Cheikh Anta Diop. Her field of research concerns the journey of the female character in connection with the arts and the media in the French-speaking African novel.

Elisa Sambou, Homestay Manager

Elisa received her Bachelor degree in International Management and Masters in Project Management from ISM Dakar. Elisa now works in their International Affairs and Accreditation Office. She is in charge of homestays for APA students and finding the perfect fit through dialogue with local families and review of student profiles.

Customized Language Support

  • Students meet each week with a French professor for one hour targeting specific areas of improvement in both oral and written French expression and separately with a teaching assistant for 30 minutes. This time is also spent learning how to write using academic French and proofreading class assignments.
  • Weekly conversational Wolof classes provide a foundation for this native language often heard around town.
