Support

Adapting to a new style of teaching, in a foreign language, in a new city and culture is quite the accomplishment! APA’s signature methodology provides the tools to thrive: a range of dedicated academic and language support is built in so students can leave Dakar feeling confident and successful both in language acquisition and their classes.

Astou Sagna, Director

Managing the academic details for students, Astou handles university enrollment, class registration, coordinating academic and language support, and liaises with faculty. In short, she guides students throughout their semester or year in Dakar. Drop by Astou’s office to chat about Francophone African literature or female characters in arts and media – it is her field of research for her doctorate program in the African Studies at the Department of Modern Letters at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar!

Customized Language Support

All students take an online language evaluation administered during the pre-departure period for APA to prepare for the semester’s specialized support.

  • Weekly individual language support: Each week throughout the semester, students meet with the French language instructor for one hour to polish their oral and written skills and proofread assignments before submission.
  • August intensive language: Students that participate in the fall semester and need a language boost before classes begin can take a three-week intensive language course via our Paris: August Short-Term program. An excellent way to shake off the linguistic rust!

  • Faculty Assistance: Outside of class, ISM faculty are available and eager to assist students
  • Peer-to-Peer study groups
  • Tutoring: One-on-one tutoring sessions can be arranged
